Where in Thailand can ESL teachers do a TOEIC test

The new requirements from The Teachers’ Council of Thailand require that teachers from other countries than the five mentioned in the requirements have to do a TOEIC test.

Verification of a passing score on the Test of TOEIC (except those who come from 5 countries: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, The United States of America, Commonwealth of Australia, New Zealand and Canada) or passing score on the other foreign language proficiency test.

Moreover, it has been reported that some Labour Offices require it when applying for a work permit.

In Thailand the TOEIC tests are conducted by the Center for Professional Assessment(Thailand).

Thongsook International – TEFL International BA TESOL for Foreign Teachers in Thailand who don’t hold a degree

A couple of years ago TEFL International and Thongsook International  introduced a 3 year part-time course which would result in a Bachelor Degree of Arts in TESOL.

Prospective applicants were skeptical about the accreditation, the curriculum,  the content and the course outline of the offered BA TESOL.

On Thailand Teaching, a discussion board for teachers in Thailand, a discussion started with questions about the BA TESOL.

Mr. Bruce Veldhuisen, Director, International Programs, Thongsook College joined the discussion to answer as many  questions as possible.

Main points until now are:

  • The BA TESOL is an accredited degree by the Office of The Higher Education Commission as department of the Thai Ministry of Education
  • The course has a curriculum and course outline
  • The course will start in June 2012

South Africa and Ireland are according to The Teachers’ Council of Thailand non-native English language countries

Thai Language, Culture and Teacher Professional Code of Ethics

for Saturday 19 May until Monday 21 May 2012.

The course will be held in Bangkok and conducted by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University.

Social Security 2012 for ESL Teachers in Thailand

Teachers in Thailand, not belonging to the group of employees as stated in section 4 of the Social Security Act, have to be registered at the Social Security Fund and Workmen’s Compensation Fund.

The maximum monthly fee amounts 1,500 THB but many employers pay half of it. The benefits are stated below.

Work Permit Renewal (WP.5) in Thailand; Medical Check Required

When renewing the work permit WP.5 as a teacher in Thailand, the current rules state that a medical check is required (point 5). It’s reported that this rule has not been enforced in every province in Thailand.

ESL Teachers with a Dutch HBO Degree face problems getting the Provisional Teaching Permit or Waiver

To acquire a Provisional Teaching Permit or Waiver, applicants have to do an accreditation check of their degree.

Copy of educational background or degrees along with transcripts, including the degree certification check from the website of TCT/ TEPC/ CSC – as stated in item 2. of the requirements.

It has to be checked on the website of the Office of the Civil Servants Commission.

Since 2002, The Netherlands has a binary higher education system. The research-oriented education leads to master degrees while professional higher education leads to bachelor degrees. The educational institutions that provide the research-oriented education areuniversities while the educational institutions that provide professional higher education are Professional Higher Education Schools.

None of the Dutch Professional Higher Education Schools are in the OCSC’s database.
